Silicon Image, a leading designer of various video and port processors has introduced SiI9389 port processor, which supports select features of high-definition multimedia interface (HDMI) specification version 1.4, such as, 3D over HDMI, HDMI Ethernet channel, audio return channel and content type bits. The chip may power various consumer electronics equipment going forward, including, but not limited to, HDTVs, Blu-ray players, personal computers, etc.

“3D over HDMI is gaining strong momentum and has become one of the key features of the new HDMI specification version 1.4. With the introduction of the SiI9389 port processor and the upgraded transmitters and receivers, we are offering our customers a comprehensive 3D over HDMI product portfolio ready to be incorporated into the next-generation DTV and home theatre applications,” said Waheed Rasheed, director of marketing at Silicon Image.

In addition to the SiI9389, the Silicon Image semiconductor product family of transmitters (SiI9334 and SiI9136) and receivers (SiI9223 and SiI9233) has been upgraded to include 3D over HDMI capabilities, resulting in one of the industry’s broadest product portfolios incorporating HDMI 1.4 features.

In addition to 3D over HDMI, the SiI9389 port processor also offers HDMI Ethernet channel, which simplifies the connectivity to Internet infrastructure. Another key advancement is the audio return channel feature which drives a high quality S/PDIF signal through a single HDMI cable, further simplifying home theatre connectivity.

It should be noted that not all HDMI 1.4 features are supported by the SiI9389 chip: for example, it does not support 4K x 2K resolutions as well as expanded support for color spaces.
