Sony Computer Entertainment plans to unveil a slim version of its PlayStation 3 game console as early as in the middle of August, if rumours published on the Internet are correct. The PS3 Slim will also be more affordable, which means that the device has all chances to be more popular than existing models.
A report by RTLinfo.be web-site reads that Sony plans to launch slim version of PlayStation 3 at €299 on the 18th of August, 2009, at the opening of Gamescon trade-show in Cologne, Germany. No exact details are clear at this point and it is uncertain whether slim version of PlayStation 3 will have any kind of improvements (e.g., larger hard drive) compared to currently available version or will not support certain features (e.g., lack of card reader or Wi-Fi card).
The rumours about PlayStation 3 slim have been floating around the Internet for many quarters and so have the rumours about a price-cut for PS3. As a consequence, such unofficial information may easily be incorrect.
It will be strange for Sony to announce a new console at a local event ahead of the back-to-school season and not even demonstrate it at the E3 show in early June. Moreover, information about new products leak well before the formal announcements and without exact launch dates. It is strange that peculiarities of the PS3 slim are unknown despite of the fact that the release date is revealed.
Sony did not comment on the news-story.
