Sony Computer Entertainment on Thursday officially confirmed plans to release its motion controller for PlayStation 3 video game console in Spring 2010 and said that fifteen video games that take advantage of the device would ship in 2010.
The newly announced PS3 motion controller is equipped with two motion sensors, three axes gyroscope and three axes accelerometer that can detect the controller's angle and movement held in the user's hand. Together with the PlayStation Eye camera for PS3, which can accurately track the absolute position of the controller, the controller can detect the natural and intuitive movement of the hand and reflect the precise movement on to the game. The sphere placed on the top of the controller is not only used to track the absolute position but can also give visual feedback to users by changing the colors or the illuminating patterns of the sphere. Furthermore, the new controller is also equipped with a rumble feature, similar to the PlayStation DualShock series controller.
Sony PlayStation 3 motion-sensing controller will be available in Spring ’10 with Japanese release window sometimes in March, but the company has not released pricing details. Still, according to Sony, there will be fifteen game titles to take advantage of the new controller next year. In particular, Sony noted Ape Escape, Echochrome 2, Eccentric Slider, Sing and Draw, Champions of Time, Motion Party, The Shoot, Tower, PAIN, Flower, Hustle Kings, High Velocity Bowling and EyePet will take advantage of the new controller in 2010. In addition, at Tokyo Game Show the company demonstrated how Little Big Planet and Resident Evil 5 also work with the motion-sensing controller.
Sony’s motion-sensing controller for PS3 will allow the company to better compete against Nintendo Wii console. However, it should be kept in mind that since Sony’s controller will not be supplied with PlayStation 3 by default, far not all video games will rely on the new controller.
