Whatever the market is, it is important to provide functionality not available on competing solutions, claims Nvidia Corp. With the approaching first breed of tablets as well as smartbooks based on ARM microprocessors and system-on-chips (SoCs), Nvidia will be able to finally show why its Tegra is better than the rivals.

For several years now Nvidia has been claiming that it has value-adding differentiators on the market of graphics processing units for desktop and mobile computers, including 3D Vision technology for creation of stereo-3D effects on special screens, CUDA-exclusive software that can be accelerated using Nvidia GeForce chips, processing of physics effects using GPU PhysX technology to create better image quality and so on.

But while Nvidia has numerous benefits on the personal computer market, it remains to be seen what kind of advantages will be offered by systems powered by Tegra SoC. Apparently, there will be a number of differentiators when it comes to Tegra-based devices as well.

"PCs have been the seat of entertainment innovation for decades. But they have always had limited mobility. Tegra is now leading the way with mobilizing the full web experience and full HD content that were only possible on high-end PCs just a few years ago. Tegra differentiators today include the first dual-core CPU for mobile applications, 1080p HD capabilities, and console-style game support,” said Bill Henry, director of Tegra products at Nvidia.

It appears that computing and graphics performance will not be the only advantages that Tegra-family SoCs may bring to mobile devices. Nvidia does have a lot of intellectual property and leverage usage of existing technologies onto mobile devices. Going forward the SoCs may integrate even higher computing power, which will allow mobile devices to further obtain desktop functionality.

“Nvidia is the only company in the mobile industry with the experience and IP to bring the most advanced 3D, CUDA and PhysX capabilities to market, but these things do take time. Stay tuned,” said Mr. Henry.
