Sony Aims High on the Tablet Market

Sony Corp., a company that only has a fraction of the PC market and which joint venture Sony Ericsson has an insignificant share on the market of mobile phones, plans to become the world's second largest supplier of slate PCs.

 

"We would really like to take the No. 2 position (in the tablet market) by 2012. At this moment, the timing of (those tablet) announcements versus (their) availability today is a different story. iPad is the king of tablets for sure. Who is going to be (the) second player?" said Kunimasa Suzuki, deputy president of Sony, reports Cnet News.

While at first the plan to be the "number two" may seem as the lack of ambitions, in reality this is a very serious claim. Provided that tablets will become a new form-factor of personal computers and thus a substantial market share, being the "number two" will result in millions of units and sales that may count in hundreds of millions of dollars. Moreover, Sony may sell content for its tablets.

"When our tablet comes out it will have content of its own. We have television and film studios working very hard to create content specifically for it," said Howard Stringer, chief executive officer of Sony.

While it is very likely that Sony will use Google Android platform for its tablets, it remains to be seen what additional features does it plan to implement onto its devices. For example, the company could enable some of its exclusive game titles - particularly those developed for the PlayStation Portable 2 that may rely on touch-screen - on the device. Additionally, the company may add features from its feature-phones to provide better functionality than Apple iPad or Samsung Galaxy Tab.
