Now that Apple iOS 7 operating system officially supports various gaming accessories, expect both iPad and iPhone to gain various controllers and add-ons designed with games in mind. Apparently, Logitech is among the first to offer one of such devices for the iPhone. Logitech is reportedly working on a controller that basically transforms iPhone into a game console.
@Evleaks has managed to publish the first photos/renderings of the first Logitech gamepad for the iPhone, which is expected to be unveiled in the coming weeks. The Logitech G-series controller for iPhone is a long block with a slot for the iPhone 5/5S/5C. The controller features a D-pad, four pressure sensitive buttons (A, B, X, Y), a pause button, as well as two analog “shoulder” buttons. There is also an opening for the camera on the backside of the controller.
The gamepad for iPhone clearly seems to be very simplistic when compared with devices like Sony’s DualShock 3 or even Samsung’s planned accessory for its Galaxy smartphones unveiled earlier this year. Moreover, the accessory cannot match functionality of Sony PlayStation Vita controllers even distantly. Nonetheless, many iPhone gamers will likely appreciate the gadget since it brings gaming on the smartphone to a whole new level.
Since many games for the iPhone are designed to be controlled using built-in accelerometer/gyro as well as using touchscreen, it is unlikely that many titles will actually benefit from Logitech’s device. On the other hand, even with a dozen of good games, the controller will be a usable thing for enthusiasts.
Logitech is currently running an iPhone gaming accessory-related teaser on its web-site, so the depicted G-series gamepad for iPhone is most likely a real product that will be released in the coming weeks.
Logitech did not comment on the news-story.
