Both Microsoft Xbox 360 and Sony PlayStation 3 have enjoyed unprecedentedly long life-cycles on the market. While it is safe to say that the evolution of the games for these consoles has not stopped, it got slower and many games did not impress as much as they used to. But since gamers waited for so long for the new generation of consoles to arrive, they will now switch to them faster than in previous cycles, according to a Ubisoft exec.
“The long wait also means that gamers are really excited about the arrival of the new consoles, and we think that there will be a faster overall transition than in the past. The number of next-gen games we’re releasing in the coming months, like Watch Dogs and The Crew, should help convince players to make the switch and ensure that the vast majority of gamers have moved to the new consoles within a few years,” said Alain Corre, executive director of Ubisoft EMEA, in an interview with Edge Online web-site.
While many leading-edge games, including Assassin’s Creed or Just Dance will continue to be released for both new-generation and previous-generation consoles, there will be brand-new franchises with new gameplay, new environments and new heroes coming that will be tailored for Microsoft Xbox One and Sony PlayStation 4.
“We have seen that the start of a new console cycle is when players typically are more open to discovering and trying new things. This is a bonus for new brands, and means there’s a better chance for new concepts to succeed,” explained Mr. Corre.
With exclusive games available widely, gamers will be eager to switch to new consoles. Quite naturally, the core gamers are already transitioning to new consoles and will continue to do so as new games arrive. Many other gamers will wait for the first price-cut, which will happen when platform holders decided that it is time, but unlikely earlier than in 2015. Around the same time games that are developed with solely PS4 and X1 in mind will start to arrive. Thanks to the fact that the two new consoles are similar on the architectural level and provide easy ways to develop games, titles in two years from now should look and feel really good.
