Samsung Electronics, one of the world’s largest consumer electronics companies, announced this week that it would demonstrate its 105” curved UHD TV at CES 2014. The new product is set to appeal to those, who want cinema at home.
“We are happy to unveil the 105” curved UHD TV, the culmination of Samsung’s advancements, following the world’s first curved UHD TV at IFA 2013. You will experience a true curved TV optimized for consumer viewing environments at CES 2014,” said HS Kim, executive vice president of visual display business at Samsung Electronics.
The Samsung 105” curved UHD TV features 11MP resolution with 21:9 aspect ratio (5120*2160), a rare combination that only has one competitor, a similar screen made by LG Electronics. The company did not reveal whether it uses OLED or LCD flat panel for the TV-ser. The former would mean better picture quality, while the latter
According to Samsung, the new 105” curved UHD TV adopts a new proprietary picture quality algorithm that delivers optimized color and greater feeling of depth. As the curved panel has been further upgraded and TV circuit technology has been added, the combination of the upgraded curved panel with a greater picture quality engine provides an immersive experience.
While 21:9 aspect ratio and 5120*2160 resolution are clearly good for watching movies, it should be noted that there are no movies in this resolution officially on the market. Blu-ray discs feature either 1920*1080 or similar resolutions (with exceptions of the old movies which were filmed in considerably aspect ratios [e.g., Gone with the Wind, Casablanca and many other were filed in 1:37:1 aspect ratio, they are available in Blu-ray in this aspect ratio]). While some BDs could benefit from 21:9 screens, they need to be upconverted, which will affect the quality.
Samsung’s 105” curved ultra HD TV will be on display at Consumer Electronics Show 2014 held in Las Vegas from January 7 to January 10.
