Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) on Tuesday announced that the PlayStation 4 computer entertainment system has cumulatively sold through more than 5.3 million units around the world as of February 8, 2014, and is continuing to demonstrate strong growth and momentum. Shipments of the PS4 will exceed Sony’s plans.
"I am thrilled that so many customers around the globe have continued to select PS4 as the best place to play throughout and beyond the holiday season,” said Andrew House, president and group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment.
Sony PlayStation 4 is available in all major markets around the globe, but have not yet been launched in Japan. The land of the rising sun will only see the PS4 later this week. It is logical to expect shipments of the console to exceed six million units by the end of this month thanks to strong sales in the U.S. and Europe as well as the launch on Japan.
According to NPD Group, Sony sold through between 270 and 290 thousand of PlayStation 4 units in the U.S. in January. By contrast Shipments of Xbox One are estimated to be between 140 and 150 thousand units.
“We are delighted that according to the NPD Group’s latest data, PS4 was January’s top-selling console in the United States. The PS4 system’s momentum just keeps growing stronger, and we are extremely grateful for the continued passion and support of PlayStation fans. February 22 sees the launch of PS4 in Japan, and I’m looking forward to Japanese fans sharing the excitement of the deep social capabilities and entertainment experiences only possible on PS4," said Mr. House.
Several months ago Sony said that it intends to sell 5 million PlayStation 4 video game consoles this fiscal year (which ends on March 31st, 2014). Given the fact that the company has not yet released its PS4 in Japan and there is more than a month of sales ahead, it has all chances to exceed its sales goal provided that its manufacturing partners supply enough consoles. In fact, Sony’s PS4 has already beaten the PS3 in terms of launch window sales; only 3.53 million of PlayStation 3 consoles were sold during the fiscal year 2006 (ended in March ’07).
