The chairman of Microsoft Corp., Bill Gates, said at a news-conference that the world’s largest maker of software is on-track to release its next-generation operating system (OS) sometime in 2009. Certain indirect claims of Microsoft confirm this timeframe, which was already once named as the deadline for what is known as Windows 7, but then the company announced different schedules for code-named Vienna OS.

“Sometime in the next year or so we will have a new version [of Windows operating system. I’m super-enthused about what it will do in lots of ways,” said Bill Gates at a conference of Inter-American Development Bank, reports Cnet News.com.

Also on Thursday Microsoft said that it would continue to offer its Windows XP Home operating system for low cost computers until mid-2010 or “one year after general availability of the next version of Windows”. The claim implies that Microsoft does plan to release its Windows 7 in mid-2009, a little more than a year from now.

Early in 2007 the company indicated that it would replace Windows Vista in two or two and a half years from them. However, already in mid-2007 the world’s largest software firm said that it would take it three years to create the new code-named Vienna operating system, which official name is projected to be Windows 7. In Janury, 2008, the world’s largest software developer implied that the new version of Windows was due in 2011.

Historically Microsoft released a new desktop operating system every two to three years, at least, this was true for Windows 95, 98, ME and XP and was not particularly true for workstation OSes – there was a four-year gap between the NT4 and 2000. However, the latest operating system – Windows Vista – shipped over five years after the XP because the company had to reassign software developers to patch the latter and release service pack 2. With a new consumer OS ready in mid-2009 the software giant will be back to its usual pace of operating systems introduction.

My prediciton that Vista would be the new ME held firm. M$ is dropping Vista ASAP and moving on to something better. I'm amazing to think Windows 7 could be released so soon but I guess they're splicing what works in vista (the gui) to the Windows 7 kernel they showed off last year to get something out the door. I'm so glad I never switched to Vista.

One of the signs of the Apocalypse!!!!

Rev.8: 1: And when he had opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven about the space of half an hour.
2: And I saw the seven angels which stood before God; and to them were given seven trumpets.

Hmmm Windows 7........kinda makes you think.......

They should just throw out the HD protection shit that they have in vista, optimize the kernel, really optimize and strip it down, and then give people the option to choose which window dressing they want to put on top of that.

I am staying with XP as long as humanly possible...

Having spent $700+ on Vista when it was released here in Australia less than 2 years ago, they expect me to buy a new OS?
I still can't get this one working anywhere near as good as my X.
How about they concentrate on getting Vista working first or give Vista users a 50% rebate on this upcoming OS, Cause I am so pissed off with Vista, Exploring folders is a joke if u have it set to thumbnail view, Just crashes your system. So much for Vista's brilliant new GUI interface.

In the server line they are now releasing refreshes to the OS, hence Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2003 R2. Since Vista and Server 2008 are using the same kernel, it wouldn't take much for MS to release a Vista R2 when they release Server 2008 R2. Maybe that is what they mean. Otherwise it seems hard to believe that they would be releasing a completely new OS so soon, since with Vista and XP's life extension, they would be selling 3 major OS versions during the transition.

Bill Gates never actually said that Windows 7 would be released in the next year. He just said "a new version." That could mean Vista SP2, like Paul Thurrott mentions on his blog(http://community.winsupersite.com/blogs/paul/archive/200 8/04/04/dissecting-today-s-windows-7-stories.aspx). Paul also says that Gates might not know much about the schedule since he is leaving Microsoft soon.

The must mean it's due towards the end of 2009 and if there isn't a beta version out by the end of this year, even that date would be optimistic. Naw, I'm not buying it.

One years does not seem like much time to implement things and do it good, though Vista proves four years isn't much more help either. I'll just stick to Vista until it becomes of 95 status on my PCs.

Unless they make some serious changes they won't win me back.
Everyone claims windows is a must for games.
It's useless.
Do you want to give your 10 year old admin rights so that a game will work.
BILL: tell manufacturers if game won't run in user mode it can't claim to be windows compatible.
Let parents log in as admin install game then hand it off to the kids in user account to play !!!!

I will actually want to agree that Windows Vista is just like Windows ME - like the mornng dew that vanishes at the rising of the sun. I bet to say that Windows XP is still a well developed piece of art.

Have you ever really thought we are in the age where "a man" can be developed, or created ? When you put all tecnoligies together such as: computoristics, robotics, and human flesh cells grown you have a "god" man has created.
He will become some, BEAST.
