Sony Corp. on Monday unveiled the world’s first controllers for TransferJet close-proximity communication technology. At present the company only ships samples of appropriate chips, hence, final devices that will be able to communicate between themselves rapidly and easily are still rather far away.

TransferJet is a wireless data transfer technology featuring a highly intuitive interface that allows two devices to communicate simply by bringing them close together. The CXD3267AGG and CXD3268AGW which Sony is introducing are large scale integrated circuits (LSIs) that realize TransferJet close proximity wireless data transfer based on the technical specifications established by the TransferJet Consortium.

TransferJet’s physical layer transmission rate is 560Mb/s, and even allowing for error corrections and protocol overheads, the effective physical layer transmission rate is 375Mb/s. TransferJet is also capable of selecting the appropriate data transmission rate according to the wireless environment. Even if the conditions for transmission deteriorate, it will maintain the highest possible wireless connectivity by automatically lowering the data transmission rate. Unfortunately, communication distance of TransferJet is just three centimeters.

TransferJet does not need complex setup for operating. Directly touching two compliant electronic products together allows files to be transferred automatically, without the need for an access point. For example, touching a TV with a digital camera enables photos to be instantaneously displayed on the TV screen. Alternatively, downloaded music content can be easily enjoyed by touching a mobile phone to a portable audio player. TransferJet can be used as a universal interface across all consumer electronics devices.

Sony is making available a reference kit and software development kit for developers. These kits facilitate the implementation of this technology into products such as cellular phones, digital video cameras, digital still cameras, personal computers and hard disk recorders.

In addition, Sony is further enhancing its lineup with the release of three modules incorporating these new LSIs: a compact module for use in mobile products, a PCI Express Mini Card module for use in notebook PCs, and a USB connection module.
