SiS May Target Smartphone and Tablets with Ensigma and PowerVR SGX Technologies
[05/26/2010 02:47 PM]Silicon Integrated Systems Corp., a supplier of various controllers that used to be a chipset designer, this week licensed a communication processor as well as graphics processor intellectual property (IP) from Imagination Technologies. The move may signal that SiS wants to develop new chips that may eventually power devices like smartphones or tablets.
SiS licensed Ensigma UCC, an advanced multi-standard communications processor technology for demodulation and connectivity, as well as PowerVR SGX, graphics acceleration technology, core families from Imagination Technologies. According to the official statement, SiS will deploy the technologies in its future semiconductor devices.
Silicon Integrated Systems has essentially quit the market of chipsets for personal computers (PCs) several years ago in order to concentrate on various supporting logic, including special-purpose controllers. Among other things, SiS presently offers controllers for SSDs, HDTVs, portable electronics and so on. Considering the fact that Ensigma UCC and PowerVR SGX cores are pretty advanced, SiS may start to offer system-on-chip devices for various rapid growing market segments, such as smartphones or tablets.
Under the terms of its licensing arrangements Imagination receives licence fees and royalty revenues on shipment of chips incorporating Imagination's IP.
