Nvidia Corp. this week revealed plans to build a new headquarters in Santa Clara, California, on its twentieth anniversary. The new home of Nvidia will consist of two buildings that will resemble two triangles, the main elements of computer graphics.
Jen-Hsun Huang, a co-founder and chief executive officer of Nvidia, remembers that he co-founded the company in a bid to make computer graphics to revolutionize computing. That vision eventually made Nvidia one of the leading technology companies in the world, which now serves numerous markets, including personal computers, mobile devices, movie industry, content creation industry, automobiles and so on.
“We have invented the GPU, revolutionized gaming, helped Hollywood make jaw-dropping movies, and powered the world’s fastest supercomputer. Our processors power life-saving CT scanners, weather simulations for TV stations, and the latest generation of cars. They’ve even helped navigate a rover on Mars. But, really, we are just getting started,” said Jen-Hsun Huang.
Nowadays, Nvidia is transforming. Having established strong position in the high-performance computing space (HPC), is moving into the cloud gaming with its GeForce Grid cards and a set of technologies. Today, Nvidia has grown from a three-person startup to 8000 staff across 40+ sites. The company’s current headquarters in Santa Clara, California, barely has a spare desk. This week, Nvidia disclosed plans to build a new campus right across the street to its current HQ, one as distinctive as the company.
The design of Nvidia’s new headquarters harmonizes smart functionality and its shape – a triangle – represents the fundamental building block of computer graphics. The new Nvidia building is supposed to “capture the ambition and imagination” of its employees and to stand at the intersection of science and art. The structures will feature “vast open floors” and are supposed to facilitate Nvidia’s cross-functional work. To bring this project to life, Nvidia has reviewed the work of some of the world’s most talented firms and chose a gifted team at Gensler company.
“We intend to extend our lead in visual computing and touch every pixel of the billions of displays that now surround us,” proclaimed Mr. Huang, who has been saying this for well over a decade now, and something that the company has been trying to accomplish for quite some time with pretty stable success.
