A high-ranking executive from Microsoft Corp’s has confirmed that its current operating systems – Windows 8 and Windows RT – will receive an important set of updates later this year. The improved operating system will carry 8.1 name and will feature a number of enhancements. The company confirmed that the preview of the updated platforms will become available next month.

“Later this year, which we have talked about some, Windows 8 and Windows RT will get even better. What has been code named Window Blue will now be officially called Windows 8.1.  Windows 8.1 will advance the bold vision that we set forward with Windows 8 to deliver great PCs and tablets with an experience that allows you to simply do more,” said Tami Reller, chief marketing officer and chief financial officer of Windows division at Microsoft, at the JP Morgan Technology, Media & Telecom Conference.

Microsoft Windows 8.1 will be delivered as a free and seamless update to Windows 8 and to Windows RT, which means that customers today who have Windows 8 or who plan to buy a new device will get all the advantages of Windows 8.1.

Microsoft stresses that the Windows 8.1 will also improve operating system’s capability to compete for enterprise customers.

“Also for our enterprise customers, we see Windows 8.1 giving them that much more confidence to be able to deploy Windows 8 devices, whether that's tablets or PCs, as well as really continuing to work on their LOB app designs, which we already see them doing,” said Ms. Reller.

Microsoft will first demonstrate Windows 8.1 updates at Build conference June 26th in San Francisco. A public preview of Windows 8.1 will be available for anyone to download at that point.

Previously it was reported that Microsoft was to return Start menu and allow skip the Metro UI Start screen with the Windows 8.1 update. In addition, it is projected that the “Blue” updates will improve battery life on new-generations of microprocessors and will possible bring other performance advantages. While the full picture of Blue updates remains generally unfinished, the enhancements of Windows 8.1 over Windows 8 have already been published:

  • New split-screen App options.
  • Improved modern UI PC settings.
  • New tile sizes.
  • New search interface.
  • Enhanced SkyDrive.
  • Internet Explorer 11.
  • Swipe up from Start Screen to access list of apps.
  • More personalization options.
  • Picture frame mode.
  • New gestures.
  • New Apps: Calculator, Alarm, Sound Recorder, Movie Moments(video editing application).

aero glass is not there in any windows 8 option they stripped it. Without aero glass Windows 8 taskbar and window frames looks like something right out of Windows 3.11 Yeah it maybe eye candy but when you are on your computer many times a day it's pleasant to the eye and doesn't become an eye sore to look at like Windows 8 window borders and taskbar does. Yes there are 3rd party Window themes, but a lot of them are either buggy or will end up messing up your registry and good luck trying to do a clean uninstall.

it's not a nitpick if it was then there wouldn't be tons of complaints saying the same thing about windows 8. the start menu is obv a highly popular feature or else people wouldn't complain about it missing it's not like they got rid of quick launch. Even though there are third party alternatives to a start menu its not the same as a native start menu, because some of the functions in a native start menu aren't present in third party ones because microsoft stripped all the start menu code with those functions from the registry in windows 8.

Many people that have pc's don't want metro many feel that it's useless on a pc and it should be disabled and I agree, because it takes an extra step to get in the desktop and it waste resources. True some third party apps allow you to skip over the metro right into the desktop but it's still active in the background using up resources.

As for more optimized for what exactly touch screens and tablets? because actual raw data benchmarks shows that both operation systems perform about equal to one another.

What I saw at your link was less than impressive, so after jumping through hoops you get: " Click on "Save changes" button and get ready to enjoy Aero glass in "Aero Lite" (Windows Basic) theme."

I have win 8 one one of the PC here it is clunky and a pain to operate. With the new Office it gets even more unwieldy. Oh for friendly XP classic inter phase and Office 2002 which worked and worked well. All that will happen is that the XP units will be taken off line and the units will be routed through a Linux to access mail if need be.

A start button that leads the user directly to TIFKAM, and then through the virtual app store isles, with their flashing app store tiles, is not a replacement for, or a solution to the 8.0 blues! If 8.1 does not have a start button that leads to the start menu, and if the train wreck, that is TIFKAM, still exists on any New PC or Laptop, that may I buy, then I will continue to use windows 7, and plan which Linux Distro I'll will dual boot with windows 7, and which linux distro I will move to, at windows 7's EOL! The best solution for M$, to fix the problem, is to allow new computer buyers, to buy hardware with windows 7 pre installed, and keep TIFKAM on tablets and Phones! No one size fits all for the desktop or my laptop, I need an OS, and not shopping network!
