DDR SDRAM Started Getting Cheaper?

Is it really happening that our forecasts about the memory pricing given in this news story start coming true? Well, it is still too hard to say for sure, however, why don’t you cast a glance at some graphs borrowed from DRAMeXchange (the red color stands for the max. price, the green – for the min. price, the blue – for the average price):

128Mbit (16M x 8) DDR266 SDRAM

128Mbit (16M x 8) PC133 SDRAM

256Mbit (32M x 8) DDR266 SDRAM

256Mbit (32M x 8) PC133 SDRAM

Now I would like to point out some very interesting observations:

  • The cost of 128Mbit DDR266 chips started falling on January 17 (very weird coincidence!). At the same time PC133 chips of the same capacity also got somewhat cheaper. However, a bit later their prices rose back up to $4 per piece.
  • The price of 256Mbit DDR266 chips started dropping about a week ago, while PC133 chips of the same capacity do not bother to get any cheaper so far (the tiny price reduction observed during the last couple of days can be neglected here).
Taking into account these observations, I dare make some preliminary conclusion about DDR SDRAM getting cheaper and SDRAM prices staying high as usual (as we have actually predicted here). Let’s continue watching the show...
