Well, the life of low-cost AMD processors became very hard after competitors from Intel got moved to a new manufacturing technology… Celeron 1.3GHz was announced on January 3, 2002, and everybody expected AMD’s response to follow right away. However, no Duron processors with the same core clock have been launched since then. No wonder, since Duron processors are manufactured on AMD’s fab in Austin with the aluminum interconnect technology and the current 1.2GHz core clock is close to the possible maximum for this process.
Nevertheless, Duron 1.3GHz will be launched, though a bit later than its competitor from Intel. The Inquirer supposes that this event should take place on January 21. As for the next Duron processor working at 1.4GHz frequency, it is expected to come out only in Q2 2002 (see this news story). Moreover, it is most likely to be made on UMC’s production lines (see this news story).
