Well, it looks as if Intel is also subject to the influence of the atmosphere of the coming Christmas holidays. The company decided to change the design of their worldwide famous processor boxes. Although they didn’t add anything holiday decorations, and the whole thing looks pretty pragmatic. Here you are:

Old Box New Box

Intel will change the design of all the boxes for its boxed CPUs: those for Pentium 4, Pentium III, Celeron, Mobile Pentium III and Pentium III-S. Here are the major changes to be made:

  • The CPU core clock will now be written on a hologram (2) and nowhere else. This marking will be removed from all other places, such as on the rear side, on the top of the box, etc. (1)
  • The system bus frequency will be written under the hologram on the front of the box and nowhere else (3).
  • The image on the hologram will be different.
The mass supplies of the CPUs in new boxes should start on January 20, 2002. so, don’t be afraid if one day you don’t see the common package design any more: it is no fake but a real Intel processor, which frequency is now written even on a hologram. :-)
