Despite seeming quite silent, ATI keeps working on its mainboard chipset aka "A4" . As we read over at Digitimes, one of the mainboard manufacturers told that this chipset is due within Q1’02.
It will be a solution for Pentium 4 processors supporting DDR SDRAM and equipped with an integrated RADEON graphics core. Besides, it will boast some power saving functions, which will make it suitable for use in notebooks, where ATI is very strong currently with its graphics solutions. They also stressed that ATI didn’t strive to make its new product win the entire non-server chipset market at once (how modest the are, eh? :). The company will aim its solution for the mobile and gaming market segments only. And if we don’t have any doubts about the first one, then the second arouses our surprise: what is actually a "gaming market segment" in the chipset field?
By the way, we wonder what ATI will call its next chipsets? A3, A2, A1 and then A0… Of course, it’s a joke, as we all know pretty well what the number “4” in the name of this chipset mean...
