Hardware Mania were really lucky to get hold of a new Socket478 processor, which turned out none other but an engineering sample of the new 0.13micron Pentium 4 based on Northwood core. You can find a photo and some info here.
Unfortunately, the guys failed to please us with anything more than just a photo, because they failed to make the CPU work at any frequency higher than 1.8GHz. And for a comparative testing they had only 2GHz Pentium 4 (Willamette) CPU. The relatively low core clock of the newcomer can be probably explained by the fact that it is one of the first products made with the new finer manufacturing technology. Besides, it maybe the too early chip revision (A5), not quite debugged yet.
If you take a closer look at the photo here, you will notice two more things: the chip has the same packaging as Socket478 Willamette and L2 cache size has been really doubled (up to 512KB) compared to that of the predecessor. Although there is nothing so new about it: we have already told you about these innovations over half a year ago. We don’t know for sure yet how high the Vcore of the new 0.13micron Pentium 4 will be. It is most likely to be equal to 1.475V, i.e. it is a standard value for 0.13micron Intel chips. However, it may also turn out a bit higher, which will be made to increase the yields.
