It looks as if not only we were puzzled with the "expansion of the license agreement with Rambus", which we have recently told you about here, because today SiS’ and Rambus’ officials made some additional comments on the matter. It turned out that the initial agreement was signed in 1994 and touched upon the use of PC600 RDRAM only (do you remember a memory like that still?). And now this agreement was simply "expanded" up to the contemporary PC800 RDRAM. Alex Wu, Director of SiS Intellectual Property subdivision added that this agreement expansion was made exclusively to provide SiS with the opportunity to use Rambus technology and not to strengthen the relationship with Intel, as many of you could think. :-)
Also he added that SiS might be using Rambus technologies for the PC products first, and then probably for the communicational and consumer products as well and that SiS didn’t have any intention to produce RDRAM chip. Of course, how could they do it with the limited production capacities like that!
All in all, we now see this agreement expansion just as a PR-action, which will hardly have any real meaning for us, users.
