- As far as the oldest and the most expensive i850 chipset goes, there is not much to be said now, as with the launching of i845 B-step it is expected to retire little by little. Especially since its price hasn’t changed a single time for the last 4 months: it costs $45 in 1,000-unit quantities with the maximum 43-$4 discounts for the first three mainboard manufacturers: ASUS, Gigabyte and MSI (Elitegroup doesn’t belong here as they have some license issues with Intel).
- Intel 845 chipset hasn’t also got any cheaper so far: the official price remains $42. However, by the end of December, when the share of i845 B-Step will become as big as that of i845, the prices will go down for both. They will go $2 down. At present the leading mainboard manufacturers buy i845 for $38, and the second-tier manufacturers (ABIT, EPoX, etc.) – for $40.
- Although the official price of VIA P4X266 chipsets makes $34, the mainboard manufacturers pay much less: around $25. Therefore, the can position their products based on it as low-cost high-performance solutions. As we remember, the major problem with this chipset is the absence of Intel’s bus license.
- The potentially promising SiS645 chipset with the official price of $34 is not selling at all yet to the mainboard makers (if we could put it this way), because only Elitegroup has already announced the product on it. Nevertheless, SiS’s closest partners, such as ASUS and Elitegroup get these solutions for around $20, and all the rest – for around $25. In fact, it is not the problem of the chipset, that it cannot be shipped in large quantities: can we blame a chipset for the lack of production capacities by the manufacturer?
