Gigabyte has announced a new mainboard based on SiS648 core-logic. The board is branded as GA-8SG667, though, their “667” index has nothing to do with the upcoming Pentium 4 “Prescott” processors that provide 667MHz FSB, thus, these numbers are used only due to marketing reasons. Given that it is based on the SiS648 chipset, the product only supports the present processors with 400 and 533MHz system bus.

Here are the brief technical specifications of the GA-8SG667:

  • Supports Socket 478 Pentium 4 processors with 400/533MHz FSB;
  • SiS648 + SiS963 core-logic;
  • 3 DIMM slots for up to 3GB of PC1600 or PC2100 DDR SDRAM. 2 DIMM slots can also function with up to 2GB of PC2700 or DDR400 DDR SDRAM;
  • 5 PCI, 1 AGP 8x and 1 CNR slot;
  • Integrated 2-channel ATA-133 controller;
  • 6 USB 2.0 ports;
  • AC’97 6-channel audio solution;
  • ATX Form Factor, round corner PCB plate;
  • Easytune 4 for overclocking under Windows environment;
  • Q-Flash and @BIOS technologies for BIOS updating under Windows.
I have no idea if this newcomer from Gigabyte meets the latest guidelines from Intel to offer Pentium 4 3.06GHz and above processor support. If it does, it can be considered as a nice solution for those, who plan to upgrade their CPU in less than a year. The company also has not announced the timeframes when this device will be available for sale and how much it is going to cost.
