Two more mainboards manufacturers, ASUS and MSI, revealed at CeBIT their utter intention to launch dual-processor Socket 370 boards based on VIA Apollo Pro266 core logic. According to a French site hardware.fr, these companies have the following products at their booths:
  • ASUS CUV266-DLS. This dual-processor mainboard built on VIA Apollo Pro266 chipset features four 184-pin slots for PC2100/PC1600 DDR SDRAM. The boards is provided with one AGP 4x and five PCI slots. Besides, CUV266-DLS features Dual Ultra-160 SCSI controller by Adaptec and Dual 10/100 Ethernet controller. Alongside with this product, ASUS will offer its recast without SCSI and Ethernet controllers aka CUV266-D. The photo is available here.
  • MSI Pro266 Plus-R. This is a dual-processor Socket 370 solution by MSI based on VIA Apollo Pro266 equipped with three DDR DIMM slots, one AGP 4x and five PCI slots. Moreover, this mainboard will be equipped with ATA-100 RAID controller by Promise and IEEE1394 controller. Look for a photo here.
To sum it up, we can assert that the idea of creating dual-processor mainboards based on VIA Apollo Pro266 has strongly appealed to the manufacturers. However, none of the so far announced boards supports Tualatin CPUs (as long as Apollo Pro266 doesn’t support this CPU core). It’s an upsetting matter as the server version of these processors will pride itself of 512KB L2 cache and this way be a good basis for high-performance systems.
