During this CeBIT session most server mainboards manufacturers show dual-processor solutions for Foster CPU, which are built on the not yet announced i860 (Colusa) chipset.
As it is forecast, Xeon series based on Foster core (a server version of Pentium 4 with SMP support) is to be released in May. The pioneers will feature 1.6-1.7GHz clock speed and 256Kb L2 cache.
Speaking of mainboards designed for this CPU, we have dug out some info dwelling on three ones:
  • TYAN Thunder i860 S2603. Equipped with two Socket 603 for Foster CPUs, the board has one AGP 4x Pro slot, two 64-bit and three 32-bit PCI slots, an on-board Dual Ultra-160 SCSI controller by LSI and an on-board Dual 10/100 Ethernet controller. Seek for a photo here.
  • Iwill DF400-SN. This dual-processor Socket 603 mainboard support up to 8GB memory. For this purpose it is bundled with 8 RIMM slots. The board sports one AGP Pro slot, two 64-bit and three 32-bit PCI slots, an on-board Dual Ultra-160 SCSI controller and an on-board Dual 10/100 Ethernet controller. The photo is published here.
  • SuperMicro P4DC6 is a dual-processor Socket 603 board for Foster with four RIMM slots. Other slots are: 1 AGP Pro, 2 PCI64, 4 PCI, 1 CNR. The board places an on-board Dual Ultra-160 SCSI controller by Adaptec and Dual 10/100 Ethernet controller. You may find a photo here.
Mass production of all the three mainboards is scheduled for May. So, if no glitches in the plans occur, in two months the first Foster-based dual-processor systems for servers and workstations can become reality.
