The problems connected with the shift from PC133 SDRAM to DDR memory keep troubling many chipset manufacturers. While the cost of DDR SDRAM modules is more than twice as high as that of PC133 SDRAM ones, the demand for chipsets supporting DDR memory is not as high as the manufacturers expected it to be. As a result, most manufacturers have to resort to all sorts of tricks to sell their chipsets. The most popular trick is to provide the mainboards with both: 168-pin SDR and 184-pin DDR DIMM slots simultaneously. Among those chipsets supporting this solution we should mention: ALi MAGiK 1, VIA Apollo Pro266 and the upcoming VIA KT266.
However, as we have already reported, SiS suggested another approach. Together with TwinMos and Apacer, SiS worked out a new specification of 184-pin PC133 DIMM modules. These modules will fit onto mainboards based on SiS DDR chipsets. Unfortunately, this is not a universal solution because it should be supported by the chipset, which should be available by SiS635 and SiS735 chipsets for Intel and AMD platforms respectively. This solution is expected to be first shown during CeBIT.
