At same time with other processor manufacturers, VIA plans transition to 0.13 micron technology for its Samuel II CPU. According to this story, the company will sign a contract with TSMC for this purpose. That is why VIA expects the prototypes of the advanced 0.13 micron Samuel II at the end of the year already. Due to this VIA hopes to reach frequency above 1GHz with Samuel II.
The first "ordinary" versions of Samuel II CPU, which will be introdused at CeBIT, will produced with 0.15 micron technology and work at frequencies 750 and 800MHz. Note that the main difference between Samuel II and its predecessor is on-die L2 cache that should allow to improve CPU’s performance. Nevertheless, main advantages of Samuel II are low power consumption and a little price tag that could allow VIA to win a part of the cheap processors market.
