Unfortunately, the company didn’t report any new launching dates for its products. It may even turn out that we don’t see them at all this year. However, we will definitely see a new server chipset known under the codename Copperhead. The first samples of this newcomer are reported to become available for the mainboard makers next week already, while the mass supplies are scheduled for the coming May. Copperhead supports up to 8GB PC1600/PC2100 DDR SDRAM, dual-Pentium III (Tualatin) processors and doesn’t have any L3 cache. It features a PCI-X bus as well as a 64bit PCI 2.2 bus.
So, it looks as if Micron got really scared by the competition on the part of VIA, SiS and ALi and decided not to attack the desktop chipset market. Instead they are focusing on the server market. Well, it’s a pity really that we won’t see so many interesting chipsets with the integrated L3 cache in the near future...
