It looks as if VIA’s efforts aimed at pushing forward the DDR memory started bearing fruit. At least on 6 February at DDR Platform Summit the reps of the three leading memory makers, Samsung, Micron and Hyundai, announced that they were ready for the massive DDR SDRAM price reduction. They haven’t mentioned, however, when this action will take place and how soon the DDR prices will drop down to the level of PC100/PC133 SDRAM. But our recent report on the memory price drop in Taiwan gives us every reason to believe the news.
If Samsung, Micron and Hyundai reduce their prices, then the other two largest memory manufacturers will have to do the same thing (Infineon and Elpida). And these 5 companies make the four fives of the entire memory market. Does this mean that it has finally got started?
