When Intel cancelled its Timna system-on-a-chip solution, which could be really popular, for instance in Internet-appliances, some companies decided to devote more time and attention to their own projects of the kind. We have already learned quite a lot about VIA Matthew, and now it turned out that SiS’s work is also in full swing. However, the chip from SiS will allow creating even cheaper systems, that’s why this solution aka SiS550 will be based on a 266MHz mP6 core by Rise.
The systems based on SiS550 are expected to be provided with SONY Memory Stick storage solution and will work in a Linux-like OS. As for the applications intended for SiS550-based Internet appliances, the list is quite small and includes www-browser, e-mail client, DVD, CD and MP3 players, and a couple of OpenGL games.
System-on-a-Chip from SiS is expected to be announced in March.
