As we happened to know from ZDNet, Intel is going to introduce new notebook processors consuming 1W or less, which should come out earlier than they have been initially scheduled (H2 2001).
In the end of January already there should appear a new ultra-low power Pentium III 500MHz working at 1.1V in the nominal mode (at 500MHz core frequency) and at 1V in case of battery mode (300MHz). Note that it consumes less than 1W and less than 0.5W correspondingly. This processor is expected to cost around $200 in 1,000-unit quantities. Besides, there will be also an ultra-low power Celeron processor, which features aren’t disclosed yet. The only thing we can now say about it is the price: around $100 in 1,000-unit quantities.
So, Intel is very likely to beat the main trump of one of its competitors in the mobile market – Transmeta Company due to lower power consumption Intel upcoming CPUs will boast. If you remember Transmeta processors from 5600 family working at 600Mhz require a bit over 1W.
