The mainboard makers keep announcing solutions based on the not yet announced Socket A chipset from VIA – KT400. Last week a solution like that was launched by Gigabyte. Their mainboard called GA-7VAXP boasts the following specs:
  • Supports all Socket A AMD CPUs;
  • 3 DIMM slots for PC2100/PC2700/DDR400 SDRAM;
  • AGP 8x;
  • 5 PCI slots;
  • ATA-66/100/133;
  • Integrated IDE RAID controller from Promise supporting RAID 0,1;
  • 8 USB ports including 6 USB 2.0 ports;
  • 3 FireWire (IEEE1394) ports;
  • Integrated 10/100 Ethernet controller;
  • 6-channel AC’97 2.2 sound aka ALC650 supporting SP/DIF Out;
  • DualBIOS technology;
  • Memory Stick, Secure Digital and Smart Card Reader support;
  • Overclocking friendly features;
  • Shipped with Gigabyte’s brand Q-Flash and EasyTune utilities.
I would like to point out that Gigabyte has finally started using the thermal diode integrated into Athlon XP CPUs. GA-7VAXP will allow monitoring the temperature with the help of this thermal diode.

The availability of the boards wasn’t touched upon.
