As for SDRAM, the situation is a bit different here, because the manufacturers switch not so eagerly to the production of 256Mbit chips here, unlike the situation with their DDR counterparts (they consider it to be more profitable to produce 256Mbit DDR chips). The global production volume of 256Mbit chips grew up by 8.9% and made 51.5 million units, and the production of 128Mbit chips - by 6.9% and made 92.45 million pieces.
To make the picture of the market complete they also reported some details about the RDRAM: despite the announcement of i850E in May, the shipments of 256Mbit chips dropped down by 25.8% (2.3million units) and the shipments of 128Mbit chips – by 26.7% and made 11 million units only.
And looking at the production of DRAM in general, we will see that the manufacturing of 256Mbit chips grew up by 17% in June and made 89.7 million pieces, while the volumes of 128Mbit chips got 4.4% lower and made 152.25 million pieces, which indicates the general tendency of the memory makers.
