Maxtor announced the fourth generation of their HDDs with SCSI interface and 10,000rpm spindle rotation speed – Atlas 10K IV (these HDD family used to be produced by Quantum Company, which now belongs to Maxtor).
Unfortunately, the company didn’t report the detailed specs of the new solution that is why we have to be happy with what the press-release says about it. Here they are:
- 36GB per platter data density;
- 10,000rpm spindle rotation speed;
- 8MB buffer;
- Average seek time 4.4ms;
- Noise level equal to 3.2bel;
- The available storage capacities: 36GB (1 platter/2 heads), 73GB (2 platters/4 heads), 146GB (4 platters 8 heads);
- Ultra320 SCSI interface.
The first samples of these hard disk drives will be available in Q3 2002 and the mass production is about to start in Q4 this year. They also report that after Atlas 10K IV becomes a mass product Maxtor will announce a new generation of HDDs of 15K series (that is with 15,000rpm spindle rotation speed).
