SerialATA: Getting Closer.

We have already told you about the first mainboards equipped with the new SerialATA interface (see this news story). Today one more company joined the most progressive ones. It is DFI, which will showcase a fully-functional system supporting SerialATA at the upcoming Computex 2002.

As we read over here, the new interface bandwidth will make 150MB/sec, following the official specs, however, the performance is very unlikely to grow up a lot compared with the already existing ATA/133 and ATA/100 standards. Why so? Actually, the disk subsystem performance in the first place depends on the HDDs rather than on the interface.

The only indisputable advantage of the new SerialATA interface is its highly convenient use and mounting, as it has much more compact cables, which will not hinder proper air circulation inside the PC case.

We would also like to say that DFI will use a HDD prototype in the demo system, because storage device manufacturers seem not to hurry up with the new interface. However, if their demo succeeds, the situation might start changing for the better.
