ICH4 Can Still Work with i850E? [05/24/2002 09:18 PM]

As is known, Intel announced its i850E North Bridge (MCH) together with the old ICH2 chip explaining it by the fact that ICH4 is connected to the North Bridge via the Hub-Link version 1.1, which is not supported in i850E (though it is supported in i845G/i845GL). Nevertheless, Gigabyte announced its GA-8IHXP mainboard based on a combination of i850E and ICH4 (its specifications are available here and here).

Of course, it might be just a mistake in the specs (they happen pretty often by the mainboard makers). However, I have the feeling that there is no mistake over there: Intel has simply introduced another "political" limitation for its chipsets with RDRAM support, making the i845E and i845G families look more attractive.
