The struggling Korean memory maker Hynix Semiconductor started to sample the world’s fastest DDR SDRAM memory chips that function at 500MHz, providing 1000Mb/s (1Gb/s) bandwidth per pin.

The DDR SDRAM chip is in 4Mx32 128Mbit configuration, and uses a 144-ball FBGA package. According to spokesperson from Hynix, even such fast DDR-I memory chip is about 10% less expensive compared to the DDR-II device with the same speed. The company plans to start the mass production of 500MHz DDR SDRAM products in the nearest future.

Fast DDR SDRAM memory devices are often used in graphics cards and telecommunication equipment. I want to stress that mainly expensive memory is utilised with high-performance bandwidth-hungry graphics cards for gamers and 3D-designers.

Hynix will start to offer DDR-II SDRAM 500 (1000)MHz chips in the first quarter 2003.
