In fact fakes are not so rare in China, and the largest manufacturers of some original goods are not paying too much attention to fakes. Until the volume of produced fakes has become mass, there is no need to worry. Once it has, inevitable actions against fakes and fake-makers will follow.

For instance, South Korean Hynix Company made today a special press-release, where they told about mass spreading of DIMM modules with fake Hynix marking. The products were noticed in China, Taiwan and Europe even! In reality these chips are not made by Hynix. They are packed somewhere in Taiwan that’s for sure, but no one knows where the wafers are actually produced (most probably also in Taiwan).

You can distinguish between original Hynix chips and the fakes very easily. The major difference between them is shown on the pictures above. Besides, there are some other differences as well (even in the metal layers of the chip itself), which are shown on these pictures (click to enlarge):
