Intel officially announced that their server Xeon (Prestonia) family got a new member working at 2.4GHz. Just like its predecessors (see this news story) the CPU is made with 0.13micron manufacturing technology, features 512KB L2 cache, is packed into a 603-pin MPGA package (Socket603) and is intended to work together with Intel E7500 chipset. It supports HyperThreading technology and dual-processor configurations. However, the new Xeon model also has some distinguishing features. The model with 2.4GHz frequency is made of 12-inch silicon wafers, while all other CPUs of the same family – of 8-inch wafers.

The 2.4GHz model costs $615 for 1000-unit quantities (2.2Ghz model costs $465, 2GHz - $305, 1.8GHz - $224). By the way, Xeon 2.4GHz is already selling in Japan for around $690.
