As it follows from this document, Intel Banias will be announced in the beginning of 2003 and thanks to its features it will occupy a worthy position in almost all the segments of the mobile processor market. The full-size notebooks as well as thin and light notebooks will acquire the regular version of Banias core, while the mini- and sub-notebooks will get Banias LV. Only the low-cost notebooks segment will remain untouched by the Banias invasion for a while, with Celeron dominating over there.
As for the actual working frequencies, in Q1 2003 we will see Banias CPUs working at 1.4GHz, 1.5GHz and 1.6GHz, and in Q2 2003 Intel will launch Banias 1.7GHz, Low Voltage model working at 1.1GHz and Ultra Low Voltage model working at 900MHz. the interesting thing is that Intel positions its Banias 1.6GHz in the same market segment as Pentium 4-M 2.2GHz, which makes us believe that these two processors will boast similar performance.
However, no wonder that Banias will outperform greatly Pentium 4-M CPU even working at higher core clock frequency. Banias is based on the enhanced NetBurst architecture. For example, as we know, Banias will acquire a 1MB L2 cache alongside with some other improvements. Banias CPUs will still use 400MHz Quad Pumped Bus and will support SSE2 instructions.
One of the major peculiarities of the new Banias processor will be low heat dissipation due to dynamic disabling of the unused processor units. As a result, TDP (Thermal Design Power) for Banias CPUs will make 20-25W while the fastest Pentium 4-M CPUs will feature the TDP of 35W. In other words, this feature makes Banias processor get really close to Pentium III-M.
For Banias CPUs Intel is preparing 3 sets of core logic: Odem, Montara-GM and Montara-GML. All these chipsets will use DDR SDRAM memory subsystem and will have ICH4M South Bridge supporting USB 2.0. The chipset bridges will be connected with Hub Link bus featuring 266MB/sec. Odem – is a discrete chipset working with external AGP 4x graphics chips. Montara-GM and Montara-GML are integrated solutions. Note that since Banias and Pentium 4 support the same processor bus, Odem, Montara-GM and Montara-GML can be used with Pentium 4-M processors as well.
As for the big events in the PC market, there is a new Pentium 4-M processor working at 1.4GHz, 1.5GHz and 1.8the official prices of these CPUs are $198, $268 and $637 respectively.
