| Chipset | Old Price | New Price | Reduction |
|---|---|---|---|
| i845 | $37 | $28 | 25% |
| i845E | $41 | $34 | 17% |
| i845G | $46 | $39 | 15% |
| i845GL | $33 | $31 | 6% |
As you can see the price reduction touched only upon i845 chipset family. This way Intel wants to speed up the introduction of Socket478 systems into the mass market. Note that now the official price for i845E is just the same as that of i815E, and the cost of i845, which is quite OK for Celeron (Willamette-128) based systems, has dropped down to the price of i815EP. Therefore the mainboards for Pentium 4 CPUs promise to get as cheap as Socket370 mainboards in the nearest future, which should push the users to making the "right" choice, as Intel thinks.
Moreover, Intel cannot remain indifferent to the latest SiS’ chipsets, which they are selling at unbelievably low prices. That is why the current price reduction should help Intel increase the competitiveness of its products against the background of SiS645 and SiS645DX.
Intel is scheduling the next chipset price drop for June 30. on that day the prices for all i845 chipsets will drop down by another $2.
