Once again I would like to point out that the distributor prices are almost always higher than the official ones for 1,000-unit quantities (the latter will also be reduced however, the numbers there will be different). I believe that this way the company tries to save the nerves of its shareholders, this explanation seems to be the best I can find.
Also please take note that boxed Athlon XP processors cost cheaper (some of them cost much cheaper) than their OEM brothers. This is explained by the fact that AMD started a special promotion-campaign for its beautiful boxes. Intel’s laurels seem to give AMD no rest (see this news story) :)
