At the recent JEDEX conference Infineon addressed JEDEC committee with an insistent request to approve new standards a bit quicker. As to Infineon’s official, faster adoption of the new standards will prevent the emerging of "island solutions" and help protect intellectual property. Of course, under "island solutions" he meant RDRAM, the developer of which caused a lot of trouble to the memory makers last year.

By the way, among the standards to be adopted as soon as possible are DDR400, about which JEDEC hasn’t yet made up its mind (see this news story). Maybe Infineon is guided by the following logic: "let’s adopt the standard and if the industry doesn’t support it, never mind". In fact, this idea makes some sense, I believe. The standard could be approved and then it would be only up to the manufacturers to decide if they are willing or not to produce the products supporting this standard.
