As we have expected (see this news story), at IDF Intel announced the launch of Xeon CPUs with 0.13-micron Prestonia core (L2 cache = 512KB) 2.2GHz, 2.0GHz and 1.8GHz correspondingly priced at $615, $417 and $251 per item in over-1000-piece quantities. These CPUs support Hyper-Threading technology (for detail click here) which allows the operating system to treat one physical CPU as two logical ones. Sometimes it may help to increase the performance. Unfortunately, tests run by Intel don’t let us assess the advantages of Hyper Threading, so let us wait for unofficial tests to appear. We’d like to remind you that these CPUs already started shipping in January (see this news story).

Of course, the launch of Xeon (Prestonia) was followed by Intel E7500 chipset known as Plumas. This one supports two Xeon CPUs, dual-channel PC2100 DDR SDRAM and PCI-X. There has also arrived a light version of Intel E7500 with only one memory channel and without PCI-X support. Price of Intel E7500 is $132 per item in over-1000-pice quantities ($92 for the light version).
