About a week after Toshiba’s announcement of the new 9.5mm hard disk drives (it’s the height) with 5,400rpm spindle rotation speed, similar storage solutions were announced by IBM. The features of the new IBM Travelstar 40GNX family look very much like those of Toshiba’s rivals:
  • 20GB per platter data density;
  • 5,400rpm spindle rotation speed;
  • 12ms average seek time;
  • ATA/100 interface;
  • 2.4Bel noise in idle state, 3.1Bel noise at work;
  • Up to 175G (2ms) operating shock, up to 800G (1ms) non-operating shock;
  • 20GB model features 1 platter and 2 heads, 40GB model – 2 platters and 4 heads;
  • 109g weight.
Unfortunately, we don’t know anything about the cache-buffer size of the new HDDs. Travelstar 40GNX should start shipping in April this year.
