Sun Microsystems on Tuesday introduced its special program under which owners of qualified Dell servers based on Intel Xeon processors can trade-in those machines for Sun’s Fire servers that allegedly perform better and get significant discounts.

“Trade in any qualified Dell server and get a 20% trade-up allowance off the list price on eligible new Sun Fire X4100 and X4200 servers with 3-year support services. That’s a potential savings of up to $1900 on new entry-level Sun servers that have 1.5 times the performance of Xeon-based Dell servers,” Sun said on its web-site.

Sun offers Dell customers to trade-in Intel Xeon-based servers for AMD Opteron-powered machines that are equipped with single-core or dual-core AMD64 central processing units. The computers are equipped with 1GB – 4GB memory, PCI-X bus, Gigabit Ethernet and other server capabilities.

Base price for a single-processor Sun Fire X4200 server starts at $2595, whereas a fully-fledged Sun Fire X4200 machine costs from $7795.
