Lenovo to Put AMD Processors into ThinkCentre PCs – Report

Advanced Micro Devices is about to enter the market of large businesses-oriented desktop computers, if an unofficial information on the web-site is to be believed. Lenovo is projected to offer its ThinkCentre A60 desktop featuring AMD chips and targeting the machines on the business users. The news comes as analyst estimate all time high market share of AMD.

IBM ThinkCentre computers have been pretty popular among large enterprises and organizations in the U.S., after acquisition of IBM’s ThinkPad and ThinkCentre brands, those computers remained well accepted among the clients. However, neither Lenovo, nor any other tier-one makers of business computers used AMD central processing units (CPUs) in their offerings designed for large business clients. According to eWeek web-site, Lenovo will be the first one with its ThinkCentre A60 desktop.

The ThinkCentre A60 will be based on AMD Sempron and Athlon 64 X2 processors and will come in either mini-tower or small desktop cases, which can be serviced without tools. Also, the computers will come with a set of ThinkVantage software tools which are designed to enhance security and provide data backup and recovery, which eases management of such systems.

Even though HP and Lenovo itself already feature AMD processors in computers aimed at small and medium businesses, no top-tier computer builders has ever offered an AMD-based system to large business customers. Lenovo has declined to comment on the A60 machines.

Currently Lenovo has A-series and M-series ThinkCentre desktop computers, which are tailored for businesses and enterprises, respectively. The company also had E-series desktops, which were targeted at small businesses, but it has discontinued the product family.
