Microsoft Corp. on Tuesday also said that Bill Gates will resign as the chairman of the board, but will return to the company in a bid to help the new chief executive officer, Satya Nadella, to define the future of the software giant. Given Mr. Gates’ track-record, this is an excellent news for Microsoft.

Bill Gates, previously chairman of the board of directors, will assume a new role on the board as founder and technology advisor, and will devote more time to the company, supporting Satya Nadella in shaping technology and product direction. Since both Mr. Gates and Mr. Nadella are software developers, it is highly likely that they will make certain changes to Microsoft’s roadmap, which was created by Steve Ballmer. The nature of those changes is generally unknown.

John Thompson, lead independent director for the BoD, will assume the role of chairman of the board of directors and remain an independent director on the board.

Not a lot is known about Microsoft’s plans in general. It is expected that for its next-generation operating system the Redmond, Washington, software giant will introduce an all-new graphics user interface suitable for different kinds of input. It is also projected that Microsoft will unify Windows RT and Windows Phone operating system for media tablets and smartphones. Some believe that towards the end of the decade Microsoft will introduce a cloud-based operating system for client computers.
