On i845S Chipset...

I would like to say just a few words here about some chipset called i845S. Don’t be afraid if you come across this baby one day: this is exactly that "cut down" i845 B-Step modification, which has already started shipping this month (see this news story). "i845S" is its unofficial name (just like i845D), however thanks to some manufacturers it can very soon become a common thing.

As you remember, i845S differs from i845D (i845 B-step) by the absence of DDR SDRAM support. As a result this solution costs $4-$8 less. If we compare i845S with the old i845 (A3 stepping), then the only noticeable difference between them will be the support of different number of memory banks: i845S supports 4 banks (2GB), while i845 (A3) supports 6 banks (3GB).
