When we looked through the CPU prices today we were very surprised to find out one very interesting thing: Celeron 1.2GHz built on 0.13micron Tualatin/256 core costs only $99 in retail now. However, as we all remember, its cost was expected to drop down to $89 only on January 27, 2002 (see this news story). And in 1,000-unit quantities it is still selling for ... $103!
In other words, we are now witnessing a very rare phenomenon for the processors from this manufacturer: the retail price of the CPUs is lower than the wholesale price (as for AMD processors, it has become a common thing for them already). We believe that we will get an official confirmation of this price drop in the nearest future, most probably in early January, as the differences of the kind are not typical of Intel at all.
