About QBM SDRAM Pricing and More…

As we read over here, Bob Goodman, the executive director of Kentron Technologies, told some really interesting things about the QBM SDRAM modules, which may be supported by VIA P4X333 chipset (see this news story). Here is some summary for you:

• QBM SDRAM DIMM design has been revised: the number of additional components has been reduced significantly.
• The production cost of a QBM SDRAM DIMM modules will be $10 higher than that of the PC2100 DDR SDRAM DIMM modules of the same size.
• QBM technology is now planned to be used only for DDR266 chips, however, it can be also used together with other memory types (FCRAM, RLDRAM, etc.).
• Integrating QBM support into the existing memory controllers will require minor changes in the chipset layout, or will not require any changes at all.
• There will be at first made Unbuffered QBM SDRAM DIMM modules, then QBM SDRAM SO-DIMM modules will come out (for network and communicational equipment, probably), and then we will get Registered DIMM modules for servers.
• The first QBM SDRAM DIMMs are expected to appear in Q1’02 already.
